Mandarins are fruits from citrus species commonly known as mandarin trees. Their flesh is made up of numerous segments filled with juice. Among the properties of mandarins stand out their essential oils, flavonoids and high vitamin C content.
Differences between mandarins and oranges
It is very common to confuse mandarins with clementines, although the latter are actually hybrids of bitter oranges and mandarins. The properties of premium mandarins and clementines are very similar.
On the other hand, mandarins are the citrus fruit most similar to oranges, but they have a more aromatic flavour, smaller size and lower acidity, a higher sugar content and are easier to peel.
Mandarins provide a higher amount of vitamin A than oranges, although oranges contain more vitamin C and B3. In addition, mandarins have fewer calories than oranges.
What does the mandarin provide?
Among the benefits of mandarins is their richness in vitamins A, C, B1 and B2, folate, bioflavonoids and mineral salts such as magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and potassium.
Benefits of mandarins for health and beauty
Mandarins are not only healthy for our body, but also at an aesthetic level, as they care for the skin, hair and teeth.
Healthier, younger-looking skin
Among the properties of mandarins is their antioxidant function, which helps the body synthesise collagen, improving skin healing and delaying the appearance of wrinkles.
Stronger and healthier hair
Vitamin B12 helps strengthen and promote hair growth, reducing the appearance of grey hair and preventing hair loss.
A tip to strengthen hair is to mix essential oils with mandarin juice, apply it to the scalp and then rinse thoroughly.
As you can see, mandarins have other healthy uses beyond gastronomy.
Weight loss
The low calorie content of mandarins makes them a very popular fruit when following a weight-loss diet.
